The ‘Top 10 Pollinator-friendly Plants for Different Situations’ guide, released by the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, offers 24 lists of native and non-native pollinator-friendly plants suitable for various urban scenarios, including gardens, hanging baskets, and ponds. UCD Horticulture, in collaboration with Dr Noeleen Smyth from the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science, released this resource to enhance Ireland’s insect pollinator population.

The guide focuses on species that flower during winter, providing a food source for hibernating wild bees. The selection considers the necessity for a diverse range of flowering plants to sustain pollinators throughout the year.

Each list in the guide includes practical advice on growing and maintaining plants, along with flowering timelines. The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan hopes this guide becomes a go-to tool for anyone looking to cultivate pollinator-friendly plants, whether in a meadow, garden or even a window box.

All plants featured in the 2023 guide have been checked against known invasive species or species that are at risk of being invasive.
